More Than Movement: Men's Health and Winter Wellness

November can be a challenging time to maintain our usual routines as the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, but staying active and prioritizing our well-being becomes even more important as we head into winter. November is also a time to recognize men's health, reminding us that taking care of ourselves means looking after both our physical and mental health.
Staying Active Through an Edmonton Winter
Colder weather doesn't have to mean putting your fitness goals on hold. With a little planning, there are plenty of ways to stay active throughout Edmonton's winter months.
Know when to take your workout indoors: November in Edmonton often allows for outdoor exercise with the right preparation. Dressing in layers and choosing clear, well maintained routes can help you stay active as temperatures drop. As snow and ice accumulate, outdoor running and cycling become more challenging due to slippery surfaces and reduced traction. Fitness centre cardio equipment, indoor tracks, and swimming pools are great alternatives for maintaining aerobic fitness throughout winter.
Keep it simple: Short workouts, stretching, or a quick walk during your lunch break can help maintain consistency without requiring a major time commitment.
Strength in numbers: Group fitness classes, recreational sports, and working out with a friend can make staying active more enjoyable.
Remember, consistency matters more than perfection. Even small amounts of movement can support your energy, mood, and overall well-being during the colder months.
November: A Time to Focus on Men's Health
November is widely associated with Movember, an initiative that raises awareness of men's health. Movember focuses on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. It serves as an important reminder that health goes beyond physical fitness and that mental well-being deserves just as much attention. Men can face unique barriers when it comes to discussing their mental health; primarily in expressing vulnerability, asking for help, or admitting when things aren't going well. Creating supportive environments where people feel comfortable having honest conversations is an important step toward changing this.
Movember also highlights several important areas of men's health beyond mental well-being:
Prostate cancer: Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men. Understanding personal risk factors, recognizing changes in health, and speaking with a healthcare professional about screening can help men make informed decisions.
Testicular cancer: Testicular cancer is most common in younger men. Understanding your body and speaking with a healthcare professional about any unusual changes can help ensure concerns are assessed promptly.
There are several ways we can support our mental health and the people around us:
Check in with others: A simple conversation with a friend, family member, or colleague can make a meaningful difference. Ask how someone is really doing and take the time to listen.
Make time for movement: Physical activity can help manage stress, improve mood, and support better sleep. Find a routine that works for you without putting unnecessary pressure on yourself.
Prioritize rest and connection: Maintaining healthy sleep habits, spending time with people you trust, and making room for activities you enjoy can all contribute to mental well-being.
Know when to seek support: Talking to someone you trust or reaching out to a mental health professional is a positive step. You don't need to wait until things become overwhelming to ask for help.
Our Epic/JAX Movember event is an opportunity to bring our community together and raise awareness of men's health. By encouraging participation and opening up conversations around physical and mental well-being, we hope to remind everyone that looking after ourselves and supporting those around us are equally important. Movember is about more than raising awareness for one month; it's about building a culture where checking in with one another, prioritizing our health, and seeking support become part of our everyday lives.
Making Wellness a Priority This November
At JAX Fitness, we encourage everyone to take small, meaningful steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Every effort counts, but this month we are focusing on modifying routines, getting outside for a brisk walk, or checking in with someone who may need support. Challenge yourself to prioritize both your physical and mental health while helping create a community where everyone feels supported. Stay active, check in with one another, and remember that taking care of yourself is always worth the effort.
